Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot wearing a black flip-flop with a sparkly purple strap and purple painted toenails. A small black paw print tattoo with four toe beans and a main pad sits on the top of the foot, shown in solid black ink with soft edges. The background is plain and the lighting is even, with the tattoo set off against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The prints began at the stile below Hollin church, pressed deep into the rime where the lane bends into the birches. Four toe beans and a main pad, each one crisp as a thumbprint, and every one heading the wrong way for a dog that had been missing since Tuesday. Mrs Abernethy had asked me to follow them, being the only person in the village who still carried a torch and didn't mind the wood after dark.

I followed for an hour. The track went past the sawmill, over the beck where the ice cracked under my boot, and into the spruce where nothing moved but the jays. The prints never wandered. They kept a straight line, stopping now and then where the dog had sat to wait for something, and once a second set joined them, lighter and quicker, that I could not place at all. I lost the trail twice and found it both times by the scuffs in the moss, like someone walking carefully so as not to be heard.

The last prints came out beside my own garden wall. They ended at the gate, turned, and went round the side of the cottage to the coal shed. The door stood open an inch, the way I always leave it, though I had no memory of leaving it that way at all. Inside, under the sacks, Biscuit lifted her head, thumped her tail twice on the flagstones, and went back to sleep with her muddy feet tucked under her chin.
