Paw print tattoos on the top of a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot with purple painted toenails shows a trail of small paw print tattoos across the top, running from near the toes towards the ankle. The prints are rendered in solid black or dark grey ink with simple shapes and no shading. The background is a pond with dark water, rocks and purple flowers, and the photo is taken from above at a slight angle.

The fox had walked the stepping stones of Hollin Mere every night since the first frost, and by morning the mud at the water's edge showed the proof of it: four small prints, pressed neat as a seal, running out to the water and no further. The herons complained about it. The frogs said nothing, being frogs.

Old Ansel, who had no patience for foxes, set a trap of bread and string and sat up with a lantern and a flask of cold tea. The moon rose over the reeds, broad and yellow, and the fox came out along the rocks, stopping on each stone as if reading it aloud to itself. Ansel held his breath and watched it reach the last stone and crouch there, looking down at its own face in the black water.
The fox studied the moon lying on the pond, then studied the moon in the sky, as though weighing one against the other. It leapt. It landed squarely on the reflection, which broke into rings and scattered to the banks. The fox sat on the wet stone, shook itself dry, and looked back at Ansel with an expression of mild disappointment, as if he had been the one to get it wrong.
He went home without the trap. In the morning the prints ran only as far as the last stone and stopped there, and the purple flowers along the bank had opened overnight. By spring the mud had washed clean, but Ansel still walked the stones after supper, setting his boots exactly where the fox had set its feet, and he never once looked up at the moon while he did it.
