Paw print with heart cut out of the pad
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black paw print silhouette with four toe pads and a larger main pad, with the heart shape left as negative space in the lower pad. Small splatter dots and short dotted lines radiate from the edges of the print, and the shapes have ragged, irregular edges. The design is black on a plain light grey background with no skin or body part visible.

The tide had turned before the Mary Ellen cleared the breakwater, and Sadie stood on the wet slipway with her nose up, reading the wind the way the old skipper had taught her. Gulls wheeled over the fish market. Brine and diesel hung in the air, and the granite was so cold it ached through her pads.

Dora Penhale, who mended nets in the shed by the harbour office, came down with a flask and crouched beside her. "They'll be late, love. Weather's coming round off the Lizard." She set the flask on the stone and the dog pressed against her knee. The boat's name was painted white on the stern, and somewhere past the headland the engine would be labouring against the swell.
Night came in grey and then black. Spray hit the quay wall in fat dots, and Sadie watched the spots spread across the slipway as if someone had flicked a brush. Dora made tea in the shed. Sadie didn't come in. She padded the length of the stone, pressing each paw into the damp, and where the water pooled her prints stayed sharp: four toes, a broad pad, and in the middle of it a small pale hollow shaped like a heart, where the wet never settled.
At first light the Mary Ellen came round the breakwater low in the water, her hull scarred but her hold heavy. Dora ran down the slipway. Sadie didn't run. She sat at the edge where the tide had left its mark and waited, tail sweeping the prints clean, until the deckhand threw a line and the boat was home.
