Paw prints on the lower back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph taken from behind a person in blue jeans and a dark top, showing a small tattoo of four solid black paw prints in a diagonal line on the lower back. The paw prints are simple silhouettes with no visible shading or fine detail. The warm, dim indoor lighting, beige floor and green cabinet fill the background.

Their dog, a grey lurcher called Mab, had gone down the rocks at Scarrow Point the night the fog came in off the water, and nobody had seen her since the bell started. Keeper Tobias Venn climbed the tower with his lamp turned low and his jaw set, because the Gannet, a Lowestoft herring boat, was somewhere out past the reef with his brother aboard.

Venn never found Mab on the rocks. He found her prints instead, four to a set, pressed deep into the wet sand below the tower and walking a straight line out toward the breakers, each one a hard black hollow in the silver. Where the tide had washed the sand flat the prints stopped, and a little further on they began again, always a stride ahead of him and never any closer.
He followed them for an hour with the lamp swinging from his wrist. The fog thinned wherever the prints led, and each time he thought he had lost them he would find one more, neat as a stamp on a letter, pointing him along the channel and away from the teeth of the reef. When he finally heard oars knocking in their rowlocks ahead, he stopped and called, and a voice called back, cracked and disbelieving.
Afterwards the brother swore the dog had stood on the bow the whole way in, barking at the water. Venn only nodded and said nothing, because on the shore the prints were already filling with the flood, and the last of them, pressed hardest of all, stood at the very edge of the tide as if she meant to be sure they had landed.
