The miller's wife had already set out the bread when the white cat climbed over the wall of Quillmarsh with a red ribbon tied at one ear, as though she had been expected. Nobody in the valley of Ossery kept cats that did not belong to someone, and nobody had ever seen one walk straight through a kitchen door without being shooed. This one sat on the hearth and waited.

The king of Ossery had lost his bells in the autumn. Twelve silver bells hung from the gate of his summer palace, and each had been rung by a different hand to mark the hours, and each had gone quiet in turn, until only the smallest remained, a dull tin thing nobody would climb to reach. The cat watched the miller's wife knead, then turned her head towards the window, towards the palace on its hill. "She wants us to go up," the miller said. His wife laughed and said cats wanted nothing but fish.

They went up anyway, carrying the bread, because the cat led them along the road without once looking back to see whether they followed. At the gate she sprang onto the iron bars, found the tin bell with a single paw, and rang it. The sound went out over the roofs and down into the valley, clear as frost, and one by one the silver bells answered from their hiding places in the palace eaves, where the king's servants had tucked them to keep the gold they were made of away from the tax-gatherers.

The king came out in his nightshirt to see who had dared. He found the miller, his wife, a loaf of bread and a cat with a ribbon sitting on his gatepost, and he understood at once what he had done. Ossery has kept its hours ever since, and the tin bell still hangs at the gate, bright as a coin where the cat's paw wore it smooth.
