Quote tattoo across two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a hand held near the lips and chin, with the words 'it can't rain' on the middle finger and 'all the time' on the index finger. The script is thin, dark grey to black linework with soft, even fill, and the lettering follows the curve of each finger. The warm, sunlit tone and pink nails sit around the tattoo, which fills the centre of the frame.

You have missed the 16:42 by a minute, and the man in the ticket office at Thornley Junction is already drawing his shutter when you tap the glass. He does not look up. Outside, the rain comes sideways off the car park and finds the gap under your collar, and the departure board flickers through its last announcement before going dark.

So you sit on the bench beside the gents, where the radiator ticks and smells of wet dog, and you take out the postcard your sister sent on Tuesday. It shows a lighthouse she has never visited. On the back, in her looping capitals, she has written the thing she always said when the weather in your life turned foul: it can't rain all the time. You rolled your eyes at her across the kitchen table for twenty years. Now the words are on your hand, two fingers' worth of them, because she dared you and you never could resist a dare.
A porter comes out with a broom and a radio playing Radio Two, and he sweeps the water off the platform in long, unhurried strokes, talking to nobody about the Leeds result. He stops beside you, leans on the handle and says the rain will ease by six. You tell him that is what everybody says. He shrugs, as if the sky were a relative he had long ago stopped defending.
At 17:05 the lights of the train come swinging round the bend, and the puddles on the platform catch them. Then the cloud tears open over the signal box and, for one minute, every puddle holds a patch of clean evening blue. You stand, pick up your bag, and step across the first of them without looking down.
