Hold her steady, Ada, the lock-keeper's dog is barking at us again. Right. You want the peaches. My father never sold a peach in his life that wasn't first argued over by starlings, and the orchard at Coldharbour had more birds than fruit that summer.

There was a boy up the ladder with a bow his uncle had carved from ash. Every morning he loosed arrows at the flocks lifting off the branches, and every morning they came back, fanning up over the hedge like a handful of thrown ash. He never hit one. My father said the arrows went so high they came down in the next parish, and the birds only laughed at him from the wire.
The day the barge was loaded, the boy climbed down with a single peach cupped in both hands, still warm from the wall. He offered it to my father for passage, a fruit for a seat among the crates. My father took it, bit it, and the juice ran down into his beard. That night the boy's arrows lay snapped on the towpath, and the orchard was empty of birds, every one of them flying west ahead of our hull.
We never saw the boy again. But the stone sat on our windowsill for forty years, and if you look hard at the sky above the next lock, you will still see them going the same way we did. Now mind the chain, there's the gate.
