Two feather tattoos on forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The left photograph shows a faceted, geometric feather in orange, red and yellow with a purple and grey circular eye, set against a thin orange sun with radiating lines. The right photograph shows a peacock feather with fine dark linework, blue, green and purple washes, and loose splashes of colour around the edges. Both tattoos sit on the forearm and fill the frame, with the arms against plain dark clothing and a grey road surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By half past ten the rain had turned the booth glass to frosted milk, and I was counting the night's lorries by the sound of their brakes. The van that pulled up had French plates and a driver who kept both hands on the wheel. He slid his papers under the slot without looking up, and I saw why. Held to the dashboard with a bent coat hanger was a peacock feather, its eye gone dark with damp, its barbs lifting each time the heater breathed.

Standard procedure said I should ask about it. I asked about the goods instead. He said he had nothing to declare but a sister's wedding and a box of tools, and I believed him, because the box was in the back, heavy and honest. Then I asked where the feather had come from. He laughed for the first time, a short bark, and said he had bought the van from a man in Arras who had found the feather on a fairground floor and kept it for luck.

He told me that a peacock's blue and green are no pigment at all, only the barbs bending light when the light is wet and tilted. I thought of a feather I had seen once, pinned to a lanyard in our canteen, cut from amber glass, hard-edged and sun-coloured. Two kinds of feather, one that pretends to be water and one that pretends to be fire.

I stamped his passport and waved him through. When the van's tail lights dissolved into the marsh haze, I found he had left the feather on my counter. I wedged it into the visor above my head. At dawn the sun came up low over the sea and found it, and for a few minutes the wet barbs threw out copper light across the glass, as if the feather had decided, after all, to be the other kind.
