Peacock feather tattoo inside ear
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
A close side view of an ear with a small peacock feather tattoo on the inner cartilage. The feather has fine black linework outlining its barbs, with teal and green shading along the vane and a gold and orange eye at the centre. Plain skin and a few stud earrings surround the tattoo against soft, brown hair.

Marta had the ovens going by half past three, the way her uncle had taught her, and by four the shop smelled of scorched sugar and yeast. The flour sacks were stacked against the back wall where the damp didn't reach. She was lifting the third one down when a feather slid out from under the fold of the hessian, long and green-bronze, its tip curled like a question.

She knew where it had come from. Mr Okafor from the flat above the chemist had been feeding the peacocks in the churchyard since spring, and the big cock with the ragged tail had taken to roosting on the bakery's bin shed. Nobody believed the old men who said a peacock could read a clock. Marta had started to think they were right about something.
She turned the feather in the light from the proving cabinet. The eye at its tip was gold, with an orange ring, and when she tilted it the teal went almost black. She had sold bread to fewer people than she'd wanted that winter, and her uncle's cough had got worse, and the feather seemed to be watching her with that single bright eye, patient as a customer who knows the till is about to close.
She tucked it behind the cash drawer, where she could see it. At six the first buses went past with their lights on, and the queue began to form in the doorway. Marta slid the first tray of cobs onto the rack and, before she served anyone, brushed each one with egg wash so that every loaf took on a faint gold ring, like something opening.
