Crescent moon outline on the inner ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon is drawn in a single thin black outline on the inner ear, with a short inner curve inside the crescent. The linework is clean and even, with no shading or fill. The ear fills most of the frame against dark hair, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the upper inner ear.

Dear Ruth, Third night on the new rota and the ward has stopped trying to frighten me, though it's still working on it. Mrs Okafor in bay four asks for her husband every hour and I tell her he's on his way, which is the only lie I have left in me. Just after two the moon came up over the multi-storey, a thin paring of it lying on its back like a boat nobody had the nerve to launch.

Stan Pulley trained me before he retired to his allotment, and on my first night he showed me the lift logbook. In the margin of every page for thirty years he'd drawn the same small crescent in biro, a single unbroken line with a short curve tucked inside it, like a cradle with something sleeping in it. I asked him what it meant. He said it meant he'd been awake when everyone else was asleep, and that was reason enough to mark it. I thought he was being daft. I've started doing it too.
Tonight, between a porter's trolley and a bag of bloods for the lab, I stood at the east window of the corridor and watched the crescent sink behind the water tower. Nobody was ringing a bell. Priya from days came in early with two teas and said nothing, which on nights is the kindest thing anyone can say. We drank them looking at the dark car park until the sky went the colour of weak dishwater.
I've pinned Stan's old logbook page above the sluice sink, next to the hand gel, so whoever comes on after me sees the drawing before they see the rota. I'll bring the rest of the pages when you visit. Mind the step at the front door, it still wants to trip you. Love, Dad.
