Peacock feather tattoo on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large peacock feather runs vertically along the arm, with a detailed eye near the top and wispy, flowing barbs extending down the length of the design. The linework is bold and dark-edged, with soft blended shading in teal, green and blue, and purple highlights around the eye. The feather fills most of the frame against pale skin, with the background left plain.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The innkeeper's wife has the fire laid by the time the coach wheels stop sinking in the lane, and you are the only guest who has climbed up from the valley in this weather. She takes your wet coat without asking and hangs it on a hook beside a row of others that have not moved since October. Upstairs, the room smells of cedar and damp wool. On the washstand someone has left a single peacock feather laid across a saucer of water, its eye turned up toward the ceiling like a cat watching for a bird.

Downstairs, the regulars argue about the pass. A drover swears the snow will hold until spring. The innkeeper says nothing, only goes to the back kitchen twice and returns with a lamp whose flame burns blue at the wick. You ask her about the feather. She says it belonged to a glassblower's son from the lower town who stayed three winters and painted everything he owned: the shutters, his boots, the tavern dog's water bowl. He left in the thaw and never sent for his things.

You go up before the fire has finished talking. In the night the feather is no longer on the saucer. You find it at the foot of the bed, damp and bright, its teal barbs stiff with frost, and the eye has opened wider than you remember. Outside, the lane has vanished under white. You sit with it in your palm until the window goes grey, and then you hear the innkeeper's boots on the stair, slow, counting each step down toward the snow.
