Red and green dragon wrapping hip and thigh

Japanese · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A coiled dragon with a horned head sits over the hip and curls down the outer thigh, with clawed feet and a flame-like mane. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with reds, oranges, greens and gold. The tattoo fills the right side of the frame against a white brick wall, with the torso cropped out of shot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ilse, I know you wanted the whole story and not Mum's version of it. The lorry is still here at Halfway Fork, the petrol station where the desert road splits in two. Uncle Piet's dragon is still on the cab door: green scales gone the colour of old pennies, red coils running down the panel, gold flames along the mane that caught every sunrise for thirty years. The lad who minds the forecourt charged me two dinars to look and then asked whether I'd come to buy it.

The night before he left for good, Piet sat on the step with a flask of sweet tea and told me about the sandstorm that pinned him here in 1989. Three days in the cab with the sand so thick he couldn't see the bonnet. He said that when the wind finally dropped, the first thing he saw was that gold mane catching the last light through the dust, and the horned head seemed to be turned towards the road home. He laughed about it, but he never drove the north route again.

I climbed into the cab this morning. The seat has split and the dashboard is furred with dust, but tucked behind the sun visor is a folded map with every fork along the road marked in pencil, and at each one he has drawn a tiny flame. There are eleven of them. The last one is over Halfway Fork, and beside it, in his square capitals, he wrote WAIT FOR THE LIGHT.

So I am waiting. I have a room above the forecourt and a flask of my own. Tomorrow I will be up before the lad to see whether the mane turns gold. Don't tell Mum. Your brother, Jurgen.
