Pear with leaves on a lower leg
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A pear with a leafy sprig and stem sits at the centre of the image, drawn in black linework. The body of the pear is built from fine parallel hatching with stippled dots on its shaded edges, leaving a pale highlight in the middle. The tattoo is in black and grey on a lower leg against a blurred urban background.

The pear tree in the yard of Vane House had given one fruit that year, and Mrs Hesketh guarded it like a cheque. You found her on the back step at six, a paring knife in one hand and a tea towel in the other, glaring at the branch that leaned over the wall from next door.

"Ripe on the inside," she said, before you could ask. "Ripe is the trouble. Give it till Sunday and the wasps will have the lot."
The lodgers had opinions. Mr Quayle, who sold barometers from a case in the hall, thought it belonged to the Rector. The two sisters from Bolton thought it should be cut into six and shared at breakfast so nobody could say who had the best piece. You thought of the engraving your grandfather kept tucked in the back of a book of ferns, a pear drawn in a thousand fine lines, so that the light seemed to come from somewhere inside the fruit itself.
On Sunday the pear was gone from the sill. In its place sat a saucer with a clean pale ring on it where the sun had come through the glass and touched the skin, untouched by any wasp. Mrs Hesketh had eaten it herself at five in the morning, standing at the sink, and she did not apologise.
You found her in the scullery that evening, peeling a pear she had bought from the greengrocer on the corner, the skin coming away in one long curl. She held out the knife, handle first. "Go on," she said. "Don't tell the Bolton girls."
