Beetroot with leaves on a lower leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A small beetroot with a rounded pink and dark maroon bulb, thin root tail and a fan of dark green leaves streaked with lime and pink stems. The shading is smooth and painterly, with soft gradients on the bulb and bold, solid areas of colour on the leaves. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale lower leg against a tiled floor, with the denim hem of shorts visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Mags,

You will not believe what Mr Pargeter has done. He has entered a beetroot in the Harvest Show that is the size of a church bell, and the judges have spent a whole morning measuring it with a length of string. I stood by the trestle table with my arms folded and said nothing, which you know costs me dearly. Our own roots came second to his again, though mine were the better shape, and Mrs Ruddock from the Women's Institute has been telling everyone that the soil on the lane is simply too sandy for red things.

Still, I have been thinking about what you said at Christmas, that a person ought to grow something they can't eat in a single sitting. So I dug up the bed behind the coal shed on Sunday and put in a row of Detroit Dark Red, the seed packet still tucked in my apron pocket. Ted says they are an extravagance, but he ate three of them roasted on Saturday and went quiet, which I have learned is his way of agreeing.

Enclosed is a pressed leaf from the first one I pulled. Look at the veins on it, Mags, pink as the veins in a wrist, and the way the dark green has gone almost black at the edge. I kept the smallest root too, the thin tail with its little curl, because it looked like a question mark. I haven't decided yet whether that is a good sign or a bad one.

Come up at the end of the month and bring your secateurs. Mr Pargeter has a bigger bed than we do, and I mean to find out what he feeds it.

Yours in dirt, Edie
