Winged heart with two birds and crossed blades
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a heart shape built from layered feathered wings, with two birds nestled inside the curve. Crossed blades sit at the base, and the wings are drawn with hatched shading and soft highlights. The image is monochrome and centred on the subject against a plain paper background.

The swifts are already screaming in the guttering when you clock on, that high thin noise they make when they're too busy to sleep. Sister Okonjo hands you the handover sheet and a mug of tea gone cold, and says bed nine has been asking for the window open since teatime. You open it. The air smells of wet tarmac and cut grass from the car park, and the birds swing past the glass so close you could count their wing-tips.

Mr Alder in bed nine was a joiner for forty years. He tells you, between the blood pressure cuff and the paracetamol, that his wife kept his chisels in a rack shaped like a heart, two blades crossed at the bottom so they never rolled out of their slots. He says swifts don't land from the day they leave the nest until the day they come back to nest again, that they eat and drink and even sleep on the wing. You tell him that sounds exhausting. He laughs and then he coughs and then he asks you to mind the window.
At three you check his obs again and the birds have gone quiet. In the morning the nest in the gutter is empty, the pair gone early, and there is one grey feather caught on the sill outside. You pick it up before the day staff come on. You don't know what you'll tell him, so you tuck it into the folded corner of his locker door, where he will see it when he reaches for his glasses.
