Pencil sketch of an open rose

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of an open rose seen from above, with layered petals curling into a spiral centre. The linework is fine and confident, with hatched and cross-hatched shading that builds depth in the inner petals and outer edges. The rose sits centred on a plain pale background, in greys only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow closed the Hollin Gate road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the inn had nine guests and one bottle of decent sherry. Mr Abernethy had booked the attic room for three nights and stayed eleven. He paid for nothing extra, but he spent his evenings at the end of the bar with a stub of pencil and the back of the wine list, drawing roses. Not one rose, but dozens, each folded tighter than the last.

My mother said he was a surveyor, which explained the steel rule that poked out of his coat pocket. I brought him tea at nine each evening, and he always thanked me without looking up, as though the tea were part of the drawing. On the sixth night I asked him why roses. He turned the sheet round. The petals lifted off the paper like a held breath, and the centre was a spiral so heavily shaded it looked wet.

"My wife grew them behind the chapel," he said. "I never got the middle right. The outside of a thing is easy enough." He tapped the spiral with the blunt end of the pencil. "It's the bit that takes all the looking."

The thaw came on the Monday. Abernethy settled his bill before the gritter had reached the bottom of the valley, and beneath the receipt on the bar lay a drawing I had never seen him make. Every petal was open except the innermost, which he had left as a single unshaded curl, pale as the paper. I held it to the window. Through the gap at its heart the road ran clear and bright, and far down the hill a car was already climbing.
