Peonies and birds across a upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A flock of small birds in flight rises from a cluster of two large peony blooms and a half-open bud. The peonies and leaves are shaded in soft grey with dense black accents, and the birds are rendered in simple silhouettes with light shading. The composition sits low on the upper back, with the birds trailing up towards the neck and leaving open skin between the motifs.

In the last week of August the apples on the Hollin Brow trees hung so low that the pickers had to stoop under them, and old Marta Pell still kept her peonies going in the strip of ground between the orchard wall and the beck. Her husband had planted them the year they married, three roots carried up from a nursery in Kendal in a wet sack. Two had bloomed every June since. The third had never flowered, and she had given up asking it to.

The birds came in the evenings, when the light went thin over the wall. Nobody in the village could say where they came from. They were small dark things, more shadow than bird, and they lifted off the blooms all at once, like a shaken cloth. Tom Ardley, who kept the bees, said they were swallows that had lost the road south. Marta said they were the ones who had been wanting out.

When her son Daniel left for the mill towns that autumn, the birds did not come. Marta went out each evening and found the peonies bare, the leaves dark and the buds shut tight. She stood in the wet grass until the bats came out over the apple rows, and then she went in and did not sleep.

In September the third root put out one bud, pale at the heart and stubborn, and it opened on the morning of the first frost. Marta cut it and carried it down to the lane. She set it upright in a jam jar on the gatepost, facing the road the boy had taken. By dusk a few small shapes had lifted off the wall, circled once over the orchard, and turned west after the light.
