Geometric rose on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A faceted rose drawn in bold black outline with angular, origami-like petals, centred on the upper back of a person whose face is not visible. Fine dot stippling surrounds the bloom and a solid black shadow sits in the lower petals, with a thin drip running down from the base. The image is a close, straight-on photograph with plain pale skin behind the tattoo.

The rose on the palace wall was never meant to be picked, so when the frost cracked its stem in the third week of the thaw, the steward sent for you instead of the gardeners. You were the folder's girl from Lower Quay, the one who could make a crane from a bus ticket with her eyes shut. He held the wounded bloom out in both palms and said the Queen wanted it whole by the feast of Saint Ysolde, and that nobody was to know it had broken.

You worked by the stove in the scullery, where the steam kept the card supple. Each facet had to meet its neighbour at the angle the old book of Harrowmere called the honest fold, no softer and no sharper. Where a petal sagged you drew a thread of ink so fine it seemed to hang on the paper rather than sit on it. On the third night the shadow in the lower petals would not dry. It pooled, black as a well, and while you watched, a single bead gathered at the base and let go, running down the stem like a tear that had been waiting for permission.
The steward found you at dawn with your forehead on the table. He lifted the rose, turned it to the lamp, and went quiet the way men do when they are counting costs. Then he laughed, short and surprised. Beneath the drip, where the ink had run, the paper had opened into a second bloom no bigger than a fingernail, its petals folded inward like a secret kept even from the Queen.
You never told anyone how it happened. The feast went ahead, the rose sat in a case of cold glass, and every guest who looked at it was certain it had been cut from the north wall. Only you knew that some things, folded with enough care, decide for themselves where they will bleed.
