Realistic white rose on a shoulder blade

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A realistic tattoo of a large open rose, with pale cream and blush petals and soft grey shading on the outer petals. Dark green leaves with fine vein detail frame the flower on the left and right. The soft blending of pink, yellow and green ink gives the flower a three-dimensional look, and the design fills the shoulder blade area of a figure photographed from behind.

The gale has been at the cottage since Tuesday, and you are on your knees in the scullery trying to get the salt out of the lamp oil cloths before they set. Your hands smell of paraffin. Outside, the rose you carried up the cliff path in a bucket of wet sacking three springs ago is still holding on against the north wall, pale as bone in the spray.

Nobody on the island believed it would take. Mr Abernethy at the supply boat said roses wanted clay and sun and a gardener with no nerves, and the rock here has none of those. You planted it anyway, in a hollow you filled with seaweed and range ash, and you talked to it the way the keeper talks to the lamp, low and steady, never once asking it to be brave.

On the third night the lamp goes dark for eleven minutes. You hear it from the scullery, the great clockwork stopping, and you climb the spiral stair with a candle cupped in your palm, counting steps because counting keeps your legs moving. At the top, Tom has the glass open and is swearing at a cracked mantle. Through the salt-blurred window, the rose has torn loose from its wire, and one bloom is pressed flat against the outside of the glass, cream petals blushing at the edges.

You do not tell him to shut the shutter. You hold the candle up behind the glass so the flame passes through the petals, and for eleven minutes the sea sees a warm, steady flower where the rock should be.
