Peony and leaves on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a large peony bloom with layered petals, seen from the side, with several pointed leaves spreading down the forearm beneath it. The linework is fine and precise, with soft grey shading inside the petals and leaves to give depth. The image is a photograph of a bare forearm against a striped top and dark trousers, with the tattoo in sharp focus and the background softly blurred.

The peonies came off the boat at Saltcombe in wet sacking, three days late, and Mrs Oriel Vane was already shouting at the harbourmaster about it when you climbed the quay steps with the barrow. You were sixteen and had been told to keep your hands out of the buckets. You didn't. You pulled one bloom free, its petals folded over each other like a stack of unopened letters, and held it up to the grey light until the gull noise stopped.

Your grandmother had grown them behind the chandlery for forty years, and she used to say a peony was a rose that had decided to be patient. Nobody believed her. The petals kept coming, one wrapped inside another, so a bud that looked finished still had another skin underneath. You learned to peel back the outer layers with your thumbnail, slowly, the way she taught you, checking each leaf for greenfly and the pale ring of rot.
By October the boats had stopped going out, and Oriel let you have the back room to draw. You sketched the bloom from the side, shaded the hollows of its petals with the stub of a pencil, and wrote her name along the bottom in capitals that wobbled. She pinned the page above the till without a word.
The following spring a stranger came in asking for something that would survive a long crossing. You took the drawing down from the wall, folded it twice, and handed it over instead of a single stem, and watched him read the leaves with the same patience your grandmother had taught you.
