A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have kept the rose bed behind the lamp room since the spring Tom Gedge rowed out to the mail boat with his sea chest and no good reason. Salt wind takes everything off this rock except the roses, which the last keeper planted in an old tin bath, and nobody has had the heart to move them. Each morning you climb the iron stairs with the oil can, then come back down to see what the cold night has done.

By June three blooms had found their way up the single stem that survived, each at its own stage, like a family lined up for a photograph. The top one was still a tight bud, its green collar folded back. The middle had lifted its petals and let a little light into its centre. The bottom one had given up all pretence and spread wide, its outer edges curling away, and it shed a petal on the step each time the wind swung round to the west.

In August the fog sat on the island for nine days and the horn ran until your throat tasted of rust. On the tenth morning the sea lay flat and grey, and a rowing boat drifted inside the reef with its oars shipped and Tom's name still legible on the transom. Nobody was in it. You did not row out. You stood in the wet grass and watched the top bud, which had opened overnight without asking your leave, and you lit the lamp that evening for the boats that might still be coming in.
