Peony flower line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A layered peony flower is drawn in dark, outlined linework with small dots in the centre. Soft, sketchy grey strokes trail around the petals, suggesting pencil or light shading. The flower fills the square frame against a pale background, with a faint edge of skin tone visible at the left.

You'll want to mind the step there, it's worn hollow by sixty winters of my boots. Yes, that's the peony bed, though the blooms won't come till June and you'll find them a sulky lot if the frost's been at them. My mother planted the first root the spring the mill closed, because she said a flower that layers itself like that has nothing to prove and everything to hide, and she meant it kindly.

The man who came up the lane that autumn was a surveyor for the railway, carrying a drawing case and a pencil he kept sharpening with a penknife until it was no longer than my thumb. He sat on the wall where you're standing and sketched our bloom from the bed, over and over, and every time he got to the middle he'd stop and rub at the paper with his thumb. I asked him what the trouble was. He said the centre was the only part of a peony that couldn't be drawn straight, that all those petals folded in on themselves like a letter someone had thought better of sending.
He never finished his line. The railway went round the valley instead, and he went with it. But in the spring a parcel came with no name on it, just a flattened sheet of tracing paper pressed between two boards, and on it was the peony exactly as it stands in the bed, every petal outlined hard and dark, the middle dotted over with little stipples like a sky before rain. The soft grey wanderings around the edge were where he'd tried a dozen versions and not quite let go.
I kept it in the tea caddy for years. Mind the gate on your way out; it sticks.
