Dilys had sold the last red balloon of the season before the wind off the Humber turned spiteful, and now she was trying to talk a boy out of crying over it. Her father, Ivor, ran the coconut shy and painted every sign on the site, and he had a saying chalked on the back of the ticket booth: Perfectly imperfect, lad, same as the wheels. Nobody had ever settled whether he meant the fair or himself. He had taught her to letter, and she had painted those words on half the boards in the place, the swoops of the capitals always a touch lopsided.

The boy's mother came back with a bag of chips and a look. Dilys untangled the string, knotted it round his wrist, and let the balloon go up over the caravans. A flock of starlings lifted off the dodgems roof after it, scattering like pepper thrown at the sky, and the boy forgot to cry.

That night Ivor found a grey feather caught in the rigging of the Wall of Death and pinned it to the booth beside his chalked motto. He tapped the glass with one knuckle. Both of them went off mid-air, love, he said. Neither one looked sorry about it.
