A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Lark Hollow would lend Ottoline Pike an umbrella, because she had lost four already and always returned the fifth with a sparrow sitting on its tip. So when the blue cloud came rolling over the allotments on the morning of the flower show, it was Wren Haddow who went to the shed for the purple one, the one with the split rib she had mended with fishing line.

The cloud was a sorry sight. It sagged low over the marrows, its belly heavy with rain it had been carrying since March. White daisies had sprouted along its underside, the way they do in a field nobody mows, and red haws had caught on its edges like sweets stuck in a coat pocket. It would not let go. "I promised the lettuces," it said, in a voice like wet newspaper. "I promised everyone."

Wren raised the umbrella. The sparrow on its tip shook out its feathers and told her she was holding it upside down. She turned it the right way round, and the cloud looked at the two of them, then at the little purple canopy, and started to laugh. The rain came down all at once on the marrows, every drop of it, and the cloud rose off the allotments lighter than it had been in months.

Wren walked home under the umbrella with the sparrow dry on top and the daisies still pinned to the sky above her. At the gate Ottoline was waiting with her arms folded. "Keep it," Wren said, and for once Ottoline did not argue.
