You have been pulling bindweed from the bed along the south wall since seven, and Mrs Ogilvie next door has been watching you over the fence as if it were a personal insult. The allotment rules say nothing about who may plant what along a shared path, so you put a row of runner beans up the trellis that Tom promised to build in March and never did.

Bea, who runs the seed swap in the church hall, tells you the trick with sweet peas is to pinch out the leading shoots, because a plant that can't see where it's going will climb anyway. You think about that for a while, and then about Tom, who arrived at the gate in February with a box of dahlia tubers and an apology he had clearly rehearsed on the bus.

By August the beans have swallowed the trellis and reached the fence, and the two of you have a standing arrangement: you water his tomatoes on Thursdays, and he picks your courgettes before they turn into clubs. Nobody has said the word garden, or the other word. Then one evening you find a tin of seed labels on your step, each one lettered in looping script, two initials set inside a crossed loop, and a small red heart pressed where the two lines meet.

Underneath the tin is a note in pencil: Plant these where you can see them from the gate. I'll be the one pretending to weed. You go out with the trowel and a torch, and the beans, for once, have something to hold on to.
