Forearm tattoo of a green flying figure silhouette above the black script Take me to Neverland, with a dotted green trail.

Peter Pan silhouette and Neverland script on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A green silhouette of a flying figure, shaded from lighter to darker green, sits at the left of the forearm and appears to depict Peter Pan. The phrase Take me to Neverland is written across the arm in black cursive script, and a dotted green trail runs from the figure and loops around the lettering. The photograph is taken straight on in daylight, with black ink and green ink both prominent.

By four the flour has got into everything you own, and Dilys still hasn't said a word about your hands. You knead the last tray of dough while the extractor fan drones and the window above the sink goes from black to the colour of wet slate.

The dotted trail starts at the back step. Someone, probably the lad who swept on Tuesday, has left a line of sugar and flour across the tiles, spaced in neat little stops. It runs past the proving cabinet, under the rack of tins, and out toward the bins. Dilys says it's the dust that falls off the sugar sacks when the wind is round from the sea, and that if you follow it far enough you end up somewhere that isn't on the map.

You don't believe her, which is why at quarter to five you follow it anyway, out past the bins to the alley where a gull sits on the gutter watching you the way gulls do. The trail stops at the wall. Pinned under a bent nail is a paper bag, and inside are four cinnamon knots, still warm, each one dusted with a tiny glittering star.

You carry them back in as the first grey light reaches the glass. Dilys takes one, bites, and says nothing for a long time. Then she slides the bag onto the counter for the early bus drivers and hands you the piping bag. Go on, she says, write it on the lid. So you do, in thin black icing, the letters leaning forward as if they're running. Take me to Neverland. Dilys snorts and says the first bus is early again.
