He had spent the morning on the thatch roof, watching the dust-moth that lived under the eaves. It was no bigger than a fig seed, with wings like wet paper, and when it lifted it trailed a glittering thread that hung in the air and drifted slowly down onto the river, the goats and the stacked jars. The old women called it the grandfathers' breath and would say nothing more about it, except that children who caught it were not to be surprised by what followed.
At noon the moth circled his head three times and settled on his eyelid. He felt no weight, only a fizz, like cold water running up his arms. Then his feet were lifting off the tiles, and the village shrank beneath him: the tanner's yard, the barge with its striped sail, his mother running out with flour on her hands.
She caught his ankle at the wall and held on while he kicked and laughed. "I flew once," she said quietly, looking up at him and then at the silver dust on her palms. Her fingers loosened. That evening the trail lay across the wheat field in a long, loose curve, and when he came back down to the roof and took off his sandals for good, he saw her footprints in the dust below the wall. They ran out to the edge of the wheat and stopped, and the glitter lay on the ground beside them where she had stood.
