Forever young in fine script
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A single line of cursive lettering reads forever young in black ink on a plain white background. The monoline strokes are thin and even, with looped capitals and connected letters. The image is a flat design with no shading, no colour and no body part visible.

Dear Hester, the man from the council came again today with his clipboard and his opinions about the north tower. He wants it pulled down before the autumn gales do it for him. I told him the stones have stood since before my grandfather's grandfather, and they will stand a while longer if someone keeps the ivy off them. He said that was sentimental. I said it was maintenance.

You will laugh, but I found your old pencil case in the chapel vestry, the one with the tin lid that never shut. Inside were three stubs of pencil and a folded note in your round hand, the one you wrote when we were twelve and certain the castle would never change. The note said only forever young, underlined twice, as if the words might escape otherwise. I have kept it in my coat since Tuesday.
The joinery boys came up the hill this morning to look at the roof. One of them, a lanky thing with ink on his knuckles, asked if the lettering over the old gate was original. I said there was no lettering over the gate. He pointed anyway, and when I looked, there were loops of pale mortar in the arch that might have been words once, or might have been weather. I did not tell him that.
I am writing to ask whether you still want the north tower saved. The council has offered a grant if we can name a trust. I would like it named after the note. I know how that sounds. Write back and tell me I am being foolish, and I will believe you, as I always have.
