Black silhouette design of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and two other flying figures above a dotted pixie dust trail, with never grow up lettering in the centre.

Peter Pan silhouettes with never grow up script

Black and grey · Flash

A black silhouette drawing of flying figures from Peter Pan, including a small winged fairy at top left and a flying boy in the right foreground, with a flying girl in a long dress and a boy lying forward in the lower half. A cursive script reading never grow up sits across the middle, and a dotted trail in pencil-like shading loops around the figures. The image is monochrome, with solid dark silhouettes against a pale, textured background.

Dear Wren,

The lift from the Ealing hub was late again, so I am writing this on the back of my Certificate of Adult Standing, which seems fitting. They renewed it this morning, stamped and folded into the tin they now call a wallet. I have been carrying it about like a stone in my shoe.

Yesterday I found the old reading room behind the boiler in the Clerks' Annex. Pinned above the desk was a drawing: a pale sheet, a trail of pencil dots spiralling across it, four black figures tumbling through the middle as if the air were water, and joined-up writing that said never grow up. The archivist said the dots were meant to be pixie dust. Nobody has made it for two hundred years, she said, which is the most sensible thing anyone has told me this year.

I stayed past closing and copied the lettering onto my hand in biro. Then I did something I shouldn't have. I stood on the desk, shut my eyes and thought of the first thing that ever made me laugh out loud. I rose perhaps a foot before my knees remembered the rules and dropped me back down, bruised and grinning like an idiot. Nobody saw. Nobody ever does.

So here is my plan. I will not tell the Office. I will keep the certificate in the tin, take the trail home, and draw it on your bedroom wall one dot at a time, so that when you are told to sit up straight and be sensible, you will have a wall that disagrees. Love, Mum. P.S. Mind the third stair. It has never been properly grown up either.
