Lion cub and quote line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A small, simple line drawing of a lion cub in a curled, resting pose sits in the lower centre of the image. Above it, the handwritten words never forget who you are run across the top in a loose, slanted script. The black ink is set against a plain beige, textured background with plenty of empty space around the design.

Rain had been coming off the canvas awnings of Ashby Market since six, and by eleven the gutters were running brown with leaves. I sold second-hand picture frames from a trestle under the clock, and most mornings nobody wanted anything but shelter. Then a girl in a yellow mac stopped at my box and asked whether I had anything with a lion on it.

I had a tin of brass badges, a box of postcards of Clacton pier, and a sheet of watercolour paper that had gone wavy in the damp. She wasn't interested in any of it. She wanted the drawing her grandad used to make on the backs of envelopes: a cub curled up asleep with its tail wrapped round like a question mark. He'd drawn it in biro every time she left the table, she said, and written underneath the same thing every time, in his sloping hand, never forget who you are.
I told her that sounded like a man who expected to be missed. She laughed, which surprised us both, and she left with a frame I'd bought for a pound off a house clearance in Walton, the glass cracked in one corner. She said she'd put the drawing inside it herself, once she'd found a pen that didn't skip.
A fortnight later a card came to the stall, posted care of the market office with no return address. Inside was a pencil sketch on the back of a bus timetable: the cub, curled tight, tail round, and beneath it a looping script I'd never seen before. It was the first thing anyone had ever sent me that I didn't have to sell.
