The lamp above theatre four had been dead since March, and Gwen Pryce had logged it three times before anyone sent a man with a ladder. Nobody came. So at twenty past two on a Tuesday, with the corridor smelling of stewed tea and the lift doors sighing open on every floor, I took the stepladder from the linen store and told myself I was only going to look.

Behind the old boiler room, in a cabinet nobody had opened since the east wing was built, I found a brass bracket and a folder of drawings gone soft at the corners. The bracket was shaped like a bird rising out of a flame. The drawings were pencil and grey wash, one bird after another, wings lifted, head turned up as if it had heard its name called from the roof. Someone had written across the bottom of the top sheet, in a careful hand, *Not to be burned. It always comes back.* I did not know who that someone was, and I still don't.
I fitted the bracket to the ceiling rail with two screws from my own pocket and a length of flex I had no business touching. My hands were not steady. Twice I nearly gave up and went back to the desk. Then the lamp came on, first a weak amber, then a white so clean it made the steel trolleys shine like new coins.
On the wall, the bracket threw a shadow: wings spread wide, tail feathers curling down toward the floor. I stood there with the ladder under my arm until the porter's bell rang for the fourth time that night. In the morning I wrote it up on the maintenance sheet in block capitals, and under *Action taken* I put one word: *Lit*.
