Phoenix with Still I rise script
Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a phoenix with wings spread wide and a long tail of swirling feather shapes, drawn in bold black linework. Above the bird, the words Still I rise appear in an ornate calligraphic script with flourished capitals. The image is a plain black design on white, with the text and bird centred and balanced in the frame.

The ash was still warm when Senet carried the salt bucket up the ladder, and I had already chalked the first curve of a wing onto the scorched plaster of the granary wall. Nobody in Teshen had asked me to paint a bird on a ruin. They had asked me to scrape the walls and carry the dead out past the river gate, which I did for three days, until my knuckles split and the smell stopped meaning anything to me.

Then I found the old pigment jars in the cellar, sealed with wax that had not cracked. Lapis, red ochre, and a black soot ground with gum that my grandfather swore came from the first lamp ever lit in this town. I mixed it thin, the way he taught me, and began with the tail, because a bird that rises has to be dragged up from underneath. Each feather was a long stroke that ended in a coil, like a rope that had decided to become a flower.
By the time the sun cleared the eastern dunes, a crowd of children had gathered at the foot of the ladder, arguing over whether the bird had eyes. I told them it had to see the sky before anyone else did. A carter's wife climbed up with a loaf and asked what the words beneath should say. I had chalked them already, in the careful hand of my father's letters: still I rise.
She read them twice, then laughed, and the sound carried down the lane like a bell. The town had been sure it was finished. The bird, its wings flung wide over the broken roof, disagreed.
