Swirling black tree design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A stylised tree drawn in solid black ink, with a thick, twisting trunk that splits into curling, scroll-like branches. Small circles and dots sit among the upper branches and at the base of the trunk. The design is shown in pure black on white with no shading, so the swirls and negative space carry the composition.

The Halloran Brothers' Travelling Marvel had three elephants left by the autumn the rain stopped coming to the south fields, and the eldest, a grey cow called Mother Pim, would no longer lie down. The ringmaster, a man named Joss Varley, counted the takings each night on an upturned bucket, and each night the sum was smaller.

In the last town before winter, a woman sold him a seed in a twist of brown paper. She said it came from a tree that grew only where somebody had told the truth inside a circus ring. Joss laughed at her, but he planted it that night in the sawdust behind the big top, where the ground was still warm from the lamps.

It grew through the frost faster than any tree had a right to. Its trunk twisted like a rope wrung dry, and every branch ended in a curl, like the tail of a cat asleep. Small round seeds opened among the upper boughs and dropped like coins. The children who came to look picked them up and carried them home in their pockets, and their mothers came back the next week, and then their aunts, and the tent filled again.

Mother Pim stood beneath the tree in spring and ate the fallen fruit from Joss's open palm. Nobody now remembers whose truth it was that the roots drank. The circus still tours the fields, and the tree still stands behind the big top with its roots in the old sawdust. When the wind comes down off the hills, its leaves turn over like the hair of someone about to say the thing they have been holding for years.
