Phoenix with watercolour splashes on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A phoenix in mid-flight, with outstretched orange and red wings and a bird's head turned to the side, sits on the forearm. A dark branch sweeps across the top of the design, and loose blue, pink, yellow and orange washes fill the background. The shading is soft and painterly, with bold colour dominating the composition.

The primer had gone tacky in the heat, so Maud worked the blue wash thin and fast, letting it bleed into the pink where the sun would sit. Out here on the Gorrel road nobody commissioned anything fancy. Lorry drivers wanted HOT FOOD and COLD DRINKS in letters tall enough to read from a cab at sixty. The widow Dunmore had asked for something else entirely.

Her bakery had gone up in March, the oven left running after closing, and only the brick chimney had survived. She didn't want her name on the wall. She wanted a bird, she said, the kind that burns and then doesn't stay burned. Maud had never painted anything that size. She sketched it first in charcoal across the breeze block, a bird banking off a black branch with its wings opened wide enough to cover the gable, then mixed the orange with a little rust so it would look like it had been in a fire and walked out of it.
By the second afternoon a dust storm was rolling in off the flats, brown as weak tea. Grit hissed against the wall and the wet ochre ran in long streaks down the left wing, dragging the feathers into drips that pooled at the bottom of the frame. Maud swore, reached for a rag, then stopped. The streaks made the bird look as if it were falling and turning at once, the way a thing does just before it catches the air.
She left the drips. When the wind dropped, the widow stood in the road for a long time without speaking. Then she went indoors and came back with two cups of tea, and set one on the ledge beneath the bird's talons, where every driver passing that morning would see it.
