Woman in cat mask with arrowed heart
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows a stylised woman with long dark hair, wearing a grey cat mask with red inner ears, whiskers marked on the cheeks and red lips. A red heart pierced by an arrow sits at the lower left, with green leaves behind it, and dark cloud-like shapes appear at the edges. Bold black outlines, flat fills and soft shading on the face give it a classic American traditional look, with a warm yellow background.

Mags Doyle had the lock open before the gull on the chimney pot finished its complaint, and she did not look back at the ferry lights sliding across the Mersey. The mask was pinned at her temple with a hairgrip, grey felt stiffened with glue, the red inner ears cut from a tin of tomato paste label. Her uncle Tomasz had called it a disguise. She called it a promise she had made at fourteen, that nobody would ever look at her face and decide what it meant.

The safe was not in the office at all but in the back of the chandlery, behind a calendar of yachts gone yellow with sun. Inside lay forty years of letters tied in ribbon, from a man who had courted a woman on the Wirral and then sailed for Valparaíso and never come home. Mags had been hired to take one thing only, a brass heart on a chain, and she found it exactly where the broker said, wrapped in oilcloth with a single green leaf pressed flat beneath it.
She stood a long while with it in her palm. The arrow stamped through the heart was worn smooth at the point, as though someone had kept touching it. Outside the sky went from black to the colour of weak tea, and the first van began its rounds with a rattle of crates.
She did not take the heart. She took the letters instead, all of them, down the drainpipe and into the back of a crab boat, and when the broker asked where the brass thing was, she told him the cat had eaten it. He laughed until he saw she wasn't joking, and then he stopped.
