Pin-up boxer tattoo on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey traditional style tattoo of a cartoon pin-up woman in boxing gloves and a short vest and shorts stands between two curved banners, one reading NOBODY'S and one reading GIRL. The linework is bold and even, with soft grey shading on the figure and banners. The black and white film-style photograph is taken close up, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame and the background softly out of focus.

Nobody's girl, that's what they called her on the bills at the Pavilion in Hastings, chalked up beside the preliminary bouts and the pie-and-mash raffle. Nobody owned her, Frankie said, and that was the whole joke, because she owned herself and the other lads couldn't stand it. I was her cornerman that summer, sponge in one hand and a bucket of cold tea in the other, and I never once saw her lose her footing on wet canvas.

The night the Dublin lightweight came over, the bookies had her at forty to one. Her gloves were scuffed from a week of sparring with the dockers at Rock-a-Nore, and she'd tied her hair up with a length of fishing line because the ribbon had gone. She didn't look at the crowd. She looked at the tape marking the ring floor, the way a sailor looks at a horizon he means to reach by morning.
In the fourth round he caught her clean on the jaw and she went down on one knee. Half the hall rose to its feet to count her out. I was already halfway up the steps with the towel, but she lifted one glove, just the one, and the referee stopped mid-count with his arm in the air. She got up slowly, rolled her shoulders, and put him on the boards with a short left that barely seemed to travel.
Afterwards she sat on the bench with the card still in her hand, the sponge beside her, and said the banner had been right all along. Nobody's girl. Nobody's, so nobody could ever take the win off her. Then she asked me for a cigarette, which she never smoked, and we watched the tide come in under the pier lamps.
