Pin-up Bride of Frankenstein design

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A seated pin-up figure with the tall, streaked hair and stitched skin of the Bride of Frankenstein, wearing a black slip dress and high heels. Bold black outlines and smooth blue-grey shading define the figure against a plain white background. Red accents on the heart, the stitched thigh strap and the lips add contrast to the otherwise cool palette.

The third night out, the cabaret dressing room smells of starch and cold cigarettes, and you are on your knees at the hem of Lorraine Dale's black crepe slip, pins between your lips. She has been playing the Bride since Southampton, and the costume has been coming apart at every rehearsal. Ship's engines hum through the floorboards like a second orchestra.

The red ribbon at her thigh is the trouble. You threaded it through the seam yourself a fortnight ago, a line of big, clumsy stitches to hold the strap in place, and she loved it at once. Tonight she catches your wrist before you can start. "Take them out," she says. "Mr Hale has been in the front row every show, and he keeps asking who put me together."

You don't argue. You sit on an upturned hatbox with the seam ripper and the lamp pulled close, and you work until the ship's bell rings four. Each stitch you lift makes a tiny sound, like a breath let go. When you are finished the slip hangs smooth, the thigh strap is loose in your palm, and Lorraine looks at herself in the mirror for a long time without speaking.

In the morning you find her on the promenade deck, grey sea running white beside the rail. She has pinned a small red heart to her shoulder, stitched on crooked, and the ribbon is tied in a bow at her wrist. "Better," she says. "Now they can see where I was joined."
