Pin-up woman with spider web on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a stylised pin-up woman in a headscarf and hoop earring, with one arm raised in a flexed pose. A spider web is drawn across her shoulder and a small rose sits on her raised forearm. The shading uses fine hatching and soft grey tones, with bold outlines and a decorative band on her sleeve.

The lathe on bay nine had been coughing since Tuesday, and Maureen Oakes was the only one on the night shift who would say so out loud. Harold Vine wanted it run through the weekend regardless, because the Admiralty had put a number on the crates and the number did not care about bearings.

Maureen had strung a web of waxed thread across the open tool cage above the bench, the way her mother had once strung one over the bread tin. Mrs Pryce from stores said it brought bad luck into a munitions works. Maureen said it caught the grit that would otherwise go down the spindle, and that so far the grit had gone nowhere but the thread. She tied a brass washer onto a length of cord and wore it at her wrist, and when the girls asked, she said it was for the lathe.
At half past two the lathe gave a long, rising shriek, then stopped dead. Maureen stripped the headstock with a spanner and a torch and found the new bearing was from the wrong batch, stamped with a Sheffield mark the drawings did not list. She folded the docket into her pocket and walked it to the office herself. Vine read it twice and said nothing for a long while, then reached for the telephone.
By six the lathe was running true. A moth had blundered into the thread overnight and hung there, wings furred with dust, and Maureen left it where it was. When the day shift came through the gates, the girls on bay four were already singing over the din, and Maureen flexed her arm at them the way she did every morning, and they laughed and sang louder.
