Pine forest and bear on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall pine tree dominates the centre of this tattoo, flanked by smaller conifers that fade into the background. A bear walks along a dark band of ground at the bottom of the design. The work is in black and grey, using soft shading and fine branch detail to create depth, and it wraps the forearm against a metal mesh fence.

Eleven hundred trees, the ledger said, and Hester Lund had counted every one of them twice before the frost came off the ridge. The third time she left the ledger in her satchel and sat on the stone wall at the foot of the valley, letting the forest count itself the way her father had taught her, with the pines standing in their ranks and the light coming down between them in long grey bars.

The estate wanted the tallest pine felled for a mast contract in Inverness. It stood at the centre of the valley, taller than the rest by a full man's height, and the instructions were simple: mark it with red paint and let the sawyers come up in November. Each evening, while she worked, a bear walked the dark track along the bottom of the slope, never hurrying, its shoulder rolling past the trunks as though it had signed the same lease as everyone else.
On the fourth day she found the bark rubbed smooth at the height of a bear's chest, and beneath it a ladder of old claw marks, scored deep and healed over, year after year. She carried this news down to Tobias Kell, the foreman, who laughed and told her that if the bear had a claim to the timber, it could take it up with the Crown. She said nothing more. Her red paint stayed corked in the satchel.
In October the sawyers arrived early, and Hester went up alone at dusk to meet them. Mist came off the river and took the smaller trees one by one until only the tall pine remained, holding its colour against the grey. Below it the bear stopped on the track, lifted its head, and walked to the trunk to rub its back against the bark. Hester left the paint where it was and wrote in the ledger a single line, which read: one tree, not counted.
