Small pine tree on the inner forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of a pine or fir tree sits on the inner forearm, close to the wrist. The tree has layered, ragged branch edges and no interior detail. The skin around the tattoo is slightly pink, which suggests the tattoo is recent. The plain background is dark clothing, and the framing is tight on the arm.

Dear Ruth,

The last of the seedlings went into the van at six this morning, and Dad still hasn't forgiven me for leaving the crate out in the drizzle. You'd have laughed. Everything at Glen Tarff is grey and wet and the sort of rain that gets down your collar, but the trees don't mind it. They just go on being what they are, stubborn and dark, pointing at the sky as if they've been told off and refuse to apologise.

I packed the little ones by hand for the stall in Fort William, the ones Mr Keir ordered for the lodge gardens. Each one wrapped in damp newspaper, none taller than my forearm. He asked whether they'd survive a city. I said a Scots pine will put up with anything if you give it a square of earth and leave it be. He didn't believe me, so I told him to come back in ten years and look.

Dad says I'm soft on them. Maybe I am. The one I kept back is on the windowsill now, rain beading on its branches. I keep thinking of the man under the awning who gave it to me for nothing, saying he'd only burn it otherwise. It's not much to look at. Just a dark shape against the glass, ragged at the edges like it was torn off the hill.

Anyway, it's coming to Leeds with you at Christmas. Don't argue.

Love, Jess
