Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tall pine tree silhouette, filled in with solid black and grey shading, with ragged branches that taper to a point at the top. A thin, softly fading trunk runs down the forearm towards the wrist, giving the design a strong vertical composition. The background is dark and the skin and white top are shown in natural tones.

In the yard behind the tannery on Sallow Street, the only tree that grew was a pine nobody had planted. Old Mrs Ferrier said it came up through the cobbles the winter the gasworks shut, a single green spike with no brothers, and that every night it grew a finger's width taller while the city slept.

Tobias Crane swept the night trams at the depot and did not believe her until the night he climbed the wall to fetch his dog back from the yard. The pine was taller than the chimney stacks now. Its trunk ran down into the stones like a long grey root, and its branches were ragged as cut paper, each tip pointing up as if it were counting the lamps going out along the canal.

He put his hand on the bark. It was cold as a railing in January. Somewhere under the stones a clock struck two, the tree gave a long creak, and a single cone came loose from the top and dropped at his feet. It was warm. He pocketed it and went home without his dog, who had already gone up the trunk like a squirrel and would not come down.

In April he planted the cone in a window box above his mother's shop. By midsummer there was a pine on Sallow Street that nobody had planted, and the children there say that if you ask it politely after dark, it will let you climb to where the lamps go out.
