Pine trees and birds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a small cluster of tall pine trees with two tiny birds flying above them. The linework is fine and the trees are built from short, layered strokes that give a soft, slightly shaded texture. It is in black ink only, set against pale skin, with the design sitting centrally on the forearm and the rest of the arm and background left out of focus.

He does not believe me, and I do not blame him, because the men have been counting the days on the bulkhead with a nail and the count has got into their heads.

This morning two gulls came down onto the rail, then thought better of it and went wheeling off towards the north, where there is nothing but water. Cook says that means land, and I said gulls will follow a ship for weeks without ever having seen land in their lives. He laughed, and then we both stood looking north for a while longer than we needed to.
I have been thinking about the tall pines at Hallowgate, where my brother and I used to climb until our mother shouted us down for supper. The needles smelled of pitch and cold, and the wind up there made a noise like a long breath let out. If I shut my eyes now I can hear it over the creak of the rigging. Two birds rose from the top of the highest tree every evening that summer, and we never once saw where they went.
I am sending this with the Lucia when she puts in at Callao, so you will have it before the spring. Tell Mother the sea is not so bad as they say. Tell her I have kept my boots dry and my promise, and that somewhere north of here the trees are still standing and the birds still go up and up.
