Sound wave line tattoo on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single horizontal line of black ink forms an audio waveform, with taller and shorter spikes that thicken near the left and centre and taper to a fine point on the right. The linework is crisp and solid black with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits across smooth, pale skin against a dark fabric edge at the top of the frame.

Dear Nell, The recorder is wired up now, though Cullen swears it will go over the side before the Dogger Bank. I have set it on the hatch cover in a biscuit tin to keep the spray off, and every night I run the spool and look at what it caught. Mostly it is the engine, a long grey hum like a kettle that never boils. Yesterday it caught Cullen singing in the galley, flat as a pancake, and the needle jumped when he reached the high note the way it does for a cough.

Last night I did the thing I said I would not do and recorded the foghorn from the wheelhouse. Harker held the cord. The first blasts are the loud ones, big thick heaps of sound, and they thin out in the middle where the wind takes them. You can see that on the trace I am enclosing: the spikes are fat near the start and sharpen toward the far end, like a man walking away from a door.
I played it back in the galley this morning with the cook listening over his porridge. When the horn tapered off to nothing, he put down his spoon and said nothing for a long while. Then he asked me to play it again, and I did, and it was the first time I have heard a ship's noise and thought of your kitchen.
Keep the kettle on. I will bring you the tape, and you can tell me what the sea sounds like from your side of the glass.
Yours, Tom
