Sound wave tattoo across the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black sound wave design sits horizontally across the inner wrist, made of vertical bars of varying height along a thin central line. The shapes are solid black with soft edges and no shading, and the design is small and centred on the wrist. The photo is taken casually against a laptop and dark fabric, with the hand raised toward the camera.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had been bent over the tape deck since the tide turned, coaxing a voice out of a reel that smelled of brine and old cardboard. The box was labelled in pencil: Skelder harbour, the night of the blow, 1978. She threaded the leader through the capstan and waited while the speakers gave up the wind first, then the slap of rope against a mast, then a man's voice calling, "Ada, keep her off the wall."

She had the oscilloscope set beside the deck, its green line jumping with every sound. She wanted the night as a picture, the way the voice rose in tall bars and flattened where the wind swallowed it. Harbour gossip said the *Morwenna* had gone out with two men aboard and only one had come back up the slip, wet to the bone and not speaking for a month. Nobody in town had ever asked him what he'd heard.

She printed the trace on thermal paper, the bars shrinking toward the middle of the sheet and then, near the end, one tall spike that stood higher than the rest. She played that section four times before she understood it was not a word. It was a laugh, short and startled, the sound of a man who had just been told the wall was closer than he thought and had decided to laugh about it anyway.

Dilys pinned the sheet beside the kettle, the spike sitting in the middle where the laugh had been. Then she left the reel running in the empty room, and the wind came up again on the tape, patient as ever.
