Pine trees fading into mist

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A cluster of tall pine trees rises from a soft, fading base, with dark crowns at the top and thin trunks that dissolve into grey smoke. The linework is minimal, relying on solid black silhouettes and blurred grey shading to create depth and atmosphere. The design is shown in black and grey on a pale, mottled background with no skin visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pines went first, the way they always did on the Norwegian run, black spires on the headland losing their crowns to the fog before their roots were out of sight. Mr Halvorsen swore they stood there for a reason, that the trees were the last honest thing a man saw before the sea took him, and then he spat over the rail and asked me for the marline spike.

I was nineteen and the ship was the Sigrun, six hundred tons of coal and rope bound for Tromsø with a cargo of salt and a crew that didn't talk much after dark. I kept the watch at the bow. Every hour I counted the trunks as they dissolved, one, two, three, until the last one stood on nothing, a smudge of grey where the cloud came down to meet the water.

On the third night the fog came off the fjord thick enough to swallow the bowsprit. I heard the trees before I saw them, a creak like timber under load, and then a shape came up on the starboard bow, black and tall, crowned and perfectly still. It was only a stand of pines on a shelf of rock, but it stood in the murk as if it had been waiting for us to notice.

Halvorsen came forward with a lantern and held it up. Neither of us spoke. The fog thinned, the trunks sank back into their own grey, and the trees were gone as though they had been drawn in charcoal and rubbed away with a thumb. He turned to me and said only, "Now you've seen one," and went below to sleep.
