Dear Ma, I am sorry about the paper. It was the good cream stock Mr Aske keeps for the funeral cards, and I took two sheets without asking, which you will call stealing. The paint tin was open on the bench when I came in from the harbour wall, the yellow pan already soft from the morning rain, and my elbow caught the lid. So the pink went where it went, and the blue ran into it, and by the time Mr Aske came back from his dinner there was nothing for it but to sign the thing properly and let him see.

He did not shout. He held the sheet up to the window the way he checks the spacing on a shop sign and said the splashes were the first honest thing to leave that workshop since his father died. He told me to keep the looping hand from the copybook, the capitals that run on too long, and to write a line of my own name across the middle while the paint was still wet. I wrote it once and it looked like a stranger's signature. I wrote it again, slower, and the ink fed into the wet colour and it looked like mine.

I am sending this one as it is, stained, because you always said a letter is only worth the fingerprints on it. The boat sails Thursday with the grey tins for Porthleven, and I have dabbed a little yellow on the back of my hand so you will know me when I come up the lane. Do not scrub it off the envelope. Mr Aske says a thing that has been splashed is harder to forge, and I think he is right.
