The tide had already turned when Nell gave up on the lighthouse and knelt on the wet slipway with a stub of pink chalk instead. She drew dots from the fish market to the harbour wall, a dash, a gap, a dash, slowing where the gulls had gathered to argue over a crust. Her uncle Tomas would have called it foolishness. He had been dead eleven weeks, and the boat had not moved since.

Loops, she decided, were for the places where you had to wait. At the bend by the chandler's she drew three rings, round and round, the way Tomas used to circle a mooring when he was thinking. Past the nets she lost the chalk entirely and had to scratch the last stretch into the grey stone with a bent nail. Nobody passed to see it except a boy with a bucket, who asked whether it was a treasure map. She said it was a way home, which was truer than she meant it to be.

By morning the tide had smeared most of the dots into pink mist. The final mark, though, survived, set neatly beside the bollard where she had finished. Sitting on it, cleaning sugar off its legs, was a bumblebee, round and dark and utterly unhurried.

Nell crouched and waited. The bee lifted, circled the bollard once, and then settled again, as if it had read the route and was only checking that she had got the last turn right. She went back up the slipway for the boat key.
