Pink and purple roses with foliage on ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A cluster of two pale pink roses and a larger purple rose, with green leaves and fine grey sprigs of foliage, runs diagonally across the side of the ribs and waist. The petals are outlined in dark lines with soft shading that gives them volume, while the leaves and sprigs are drawn in thinner, more delicate strokes. The palette is mostly soft pinks and lilac with bright green foliage against the skin tone.

Dear Nell, the pink ones came up first, as they always do, pale as the inside of a shell, and I stood in the lane with the pruning hook like a fool waiting for the purple to show itself. It did on Thursday, out past the stile where the wood starts. Nobody planted it. Dad swore the roots were older than the church.

The lads from the farm say the wood has a way of putting things where it likes. The grey sprigs that grew between the blooms were gone by Friday, and in their place the green leaves had thickened until you could hardly push through to the gate. Mrs Ashby came up with her basket and said the flowers smelled of rain before the rain, which I thought was nonsense until I put my face in them and sneezed.

I cut three stems for the kitchen window, two pale and one purple. By morning the pinks had gone papery at the edges, the way they do. The purple was still tight and dark as a plum, and the stem had a fresh cut on it that I hadn't made. I pressed it between the pages of Mum's cookery book, the one with the cracked spine, at the page for blackberry jam.

When you come at Easter, look for it. It will be the only thing in the house that hasn't started to fade, and I have decided not to ask why.
