Small fleur-de-lis tattoo on a toe
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot with a small, solid black fleur-de-lis tattoo on the middle toe. The design has simple, bold outlines with little internal detail, and the ink appears dark and even. The pale skin, pink toenails and soft, plain background keep the focus on the small tattoo.

The herald of Lessory had lost his tongue to a winter fever, so for thirty years the proclamations of the realm were carried by a stamped iron seal instead. Each morning the scribe at the gatehouse pressed the lily into warm wax and sent the riders out along the salt road with it. When the miller's daughter, Orla Penhallow, came up the hill with a sack of unmarked coins, the scribe refused her at first. The coins were from the drowned provinces and bore a different crest entirely. She sat on the step until dusk, turning a thimble over in her fingers, until the old scribe grew tired of the silence and asked what she wanted sealed.
She wanted nothing sealed. She wanted the lily pressed onto the back of her own hand, so that when the riders came to take her to the border she could show them the mark and be let through as one of the crown's own. The scribe laughed for the first time in years and fetched the iron. It hurt less than she expected, and the wax of her skin took the impression cleanly, dark and even, while the river below kept carrying the news of the realm out to sea.
