Pink ball of yarn with crochet hook

Traditional · Colour · Photo

A pink ball of yarn with loose strands trailing from it is pierced by a grey crochet hook running vertically through the centre. The yarn is shaded with lighter and darker pinks and defined by dark outlines, with highlights suggesting a soft, rounded form. The plain pale skin behind the design keeps the composition simple and focused on the single motif.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pargeter swore the hook had been in the yarn since the Tuesday, and nobody on the Milton Lane allotments was going to argue with a woman who had carried a Victoria sponge to every funeral for forty years. Bev from number six had come round with the scarf she'd started for her grandson, and the pink wool had knotted itself into a bird's nest the size of a cabbage. Pargeter took one look and sent for the tea urn.

The trouble, Bev said, was that the hook had gone walkabout. Someone had borrowed it for the church bunting, and it had come back with a fig-coloured loop still caught on the barb. Pargeter unpicked the loop with her teeth, which she said she'd learned from her mother, and rolled the wool back into a ball on the step while the wasps circled the windfalls. It was the nicest ball of pink she had ever seen, she said, but it would never be a scarf unless somebody sat down and worked.

So they sat. Bev talked about her husband's bad knee, Pargeter talked about the vicar's bad temper, and the hook went in and out, in and out, the stitches piling up like small pink stones along the path. By four o'clock the bird's nest was a proper rectangle, lumpy at one end and too long at the other, and Bev declared it perfect.

Pargeter wound the spare yarn back onto its ball, pushed the hook through the middle to hold it still, and left it on the windowsill for the sun to fade. Nobody on Milton Lane ever did find out who had really borrowed the bunting hook, and Pargeter never told them.
